Rosh Hashanah 2008
Nissan 5769
Dear Friends,
The
more charity the more peace. Hillel. Mishnah: Avot, 2.7.
As Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur approach, we reflect on the blessings of our
lives and gather with family and friends to acknowledge the year that has
passed and plan for the year to come. What about those who are alone,
vulnerable and elderly? What will they do to commemorate the New Year? What
challenges are they facing? How can we help them live their remaining years
with dignity, happiness and health?
Through
your gift to ChaiSouthAfrica, you can create a sweet New Year for Mrs.
Cohen, born in Vilna, and now living out her sunset years at Sandringham
Gardens; for Mr. Goodman who never had children and who has lived at Savyon
in Bulawayo for 20 years; for Mr. Jaffe who loves life but was born with a
mental disability and would not have a place to live without Glendale; and
for Ruth, 8 years old, now a
ward of the court, being protected at Arcadia
and for so many more.
In the past, your donations have enabled your fellow Jews to live in
dignity with all their spiritual,
medical and social needs met in a secure, warm Jewish environment. This
year presents a new set of challenges. With the increased cost of the most
basic supplies—food, medicine and equipment—we ask that you consider a
higher gift level to ensure that services continue to be provided and that
the elderly, disabled and vulnerable Jews of Southern Africa are not
forgotten.
To accomplish all that we desire and dream of, we rely on everyone’s
participation.
To continue to provide for the 15 homes that we support, we need to remain
committed and united in our efforts.
A
brief update from some of the homes ChaiSouthAfrica supports:

Sandringham Gardens:
There is a pressing need for new
elevators. Wheelchairs are old and broken
and need replacing. Additionally there are insufficient walkers for all
the residents that need them.
Selwyn Segal:
Staffing continues to be a challenge as the homes’ resident population
ages and require aides to accompany them to doctor appointments and
hospital stays. Our Parents
Home: Medical supplies continue to rise in cost and equipment needed
to assist the residents has become exorbitantly unaffordable.
Glendale: Now 42 years old is in dire need of
an upgrade. They are in the unique situation whereby the residents are
not only mentally challenged but are aging and frail and need extra
care. Jaffa:
From new carpet to vacuum cleaners, baking ovens to lift repairs,
Jaffa continues to struggle.
Jewel House:
Four new beds were purchased with their funds from the recent
distribution from ChaiSouthAfrica, however, they still need new security
fencing and room upgrades.
Beth Shalom: In Durban an oxygenator (an oxygen producing
machine) was purchased with funds from ChaiSouthAfrica. A major
renovation project is under way at
Oranjia in Cape Town. All the homes
needs are continuously increasing as they struggle to keep pace with the
inflation now running at 12%

At
Savyon in Zimbabwe the situation is grave and
the horrific economic situation deteriorates on a daily basis. The staff
and residents of Savyon are extremely grateful for the generous
donations as they are re-assured that their day-to-day needs are well
catered for. With ingredients sent from
South Africa, bread is baked daily by
Florence
(shown in picture) on site for the residents. It is also given to the
staff for their families as a daily bonus.
Please consider a one time,
monthly or annual TAX DEDUCTIBLE
gift, or take the opportunity now or anytime throughout the year to send
a tribute donation in honor of
or in memory of someone. At this special time of Yom Kippur and Yiskor
Remembrance please memorialize your deceased loved ones by making a tribute
donation.
Consider a tribute donation in lieu of birthday, anniversary, barmitzvah and
wedding gifts.
A gift that reaches out from your heart to touch the hearts of
others.
Please make a contribution for the
needs of today and into the future. The homes of
Southern Africa
depend on the continued generosity of our donors so please respond to the
maximum level you can.
At this time of Tzedakah let us not forget Mrs. Cohen, Mr. Goodman, Mr.
Jaffe, Ruth and so many others
