| GLENDALE HOME NEWSLETTER NUMBER 10 NOV 2005 The year 5766 in the Jewish Calendar has not been a happy one world-wide. Natural disasters and man motivated calamities have taken its toll on all communities in so many countries. Let us hope and pray that the afflicted will find relief from their pain and suffering and that peace and stability will prevail in the years to come. The Chairperson and Committee wish all Parents, Guardians and Residents a happy and bright Chanukah. May the lights shine on all mankind in the future. The Annual General Meeting was held on the 29th August 2005 and unfortunately the pattern continues – Parents were conspicuous by their absence and only a few faithful attended – why? It is high time that Parents shared responsibility in the welfare of Glendale. Selwyn Solomon relinquished the chair after 4 years of dedicated service and leadership. The good news is, he stays on as Treasurer. The first time in the history of Glendale a lady has been elected to the chair. Dalia Lichtenstein is a Labour Attorney and a partner at Bagraims Law Firm. A most capable and dedicated young lady. We wish her well in her new post. The incoming Committee is :- Dalia Lichtenstein Chairperson, Mark Norton Vice-Chairman, Selwyn Solomon Treasurer. Committee. Michael Bagraim, Zvi Brivik, Lily Cammerman, Dr.L.Cohen, Sophie Codron, Solly Greenstein, Dave Lepar, Dr.Solly Lison,. Goldie Norris, .Ivor Oblowitz, Steven Sacks and Joanne Shev. There has been much talk about Glendale’s intended move to Highlands and many rumours abound. Presently this aspect is being investigated and is definitely not au fait compli. A feasibility study is being undertaken and if anything should transpire in this regard everyone will be notified in good time. One thing is for certain, nothing will be done to the detriment of the residents and their well-being will in no way be compromised. They are our first priority Rosh Hashanah Second Night Dinner was once again a huge success. Diarise that Second Seder will once again be hosted by Glendale. If you have missed out previously, this can be rectified by booking early. Another date to be diarised is Julia’s Fish Braai which will take place on the 5th February 2006. An event not to be missed. Our local Mini Spar is sponsoring the December birthday party and providing entertainment. A wonderful neighborly gesture. November 2006 Glendale will have been in existence for 40 years. Quite a milestone. It is intended to have a function of particular note to commemorate this occasion. You will be advised nearer the time as to what form this will take. Recently we had a visit from Chief Rabbi Dr Warren Goldstein. He was most impressed with the environment, grounds and in particular our endeavours in assisting the intellectually disabled in the community We are in the process of installing a mini dental surgery donated by Alpha Omega. Dr.Norman Nocke and Dr.Joe Abramowitz were largely responsible in bringing this to fruition. We thank all concerned. 8 Residents spent a week-end on the 4th – 6th November at Mykonos They had a most wonderful time. This has become a regular event. Every endeavour will be made that this continues on an ongoing basis. The emphasis for the ensuing year will be on outdoor participation. The Consecration of the late Rochelle Maltz will take place sometime towards the end of November. Date and time will appear in the Argus/Cape Times. Parents/Guardians are once again reminded not to give instructions or make requests to the General Assistants but only to the Sister on duty. The Union of Jewish Women Constantia Group contributed to the purchase of our new gas stove. Many thanks to them for this kind and wonderful gesture. The Union of Jewish Women have been associated with Glendale for many years. Glendale is now literally cooking with gas. Eden Benson now comes to the home on a regular basis and involves our residents perfoming the Reiki Technique– They love it. The usual activities such as going to Shul, Aerobics, birthday parties, paw-pals, drama classes, pottery classes etc continue on a regular basis. Sheila Joffe an old friend of Glendale has been doing facials for the residents for many years and is soon to celebrate her 80th birthday.
