NEWSLETTER NUMBER 8
FEBRUARY 2005
The year 2004 has been a difficult one in so many different ways,
and the staff are to be commended for the efficient way matters
were resolved. Certain residents proved disruptive and unmanageable
but because of their professionalism and perseverance in conjunction
with the medical personnel they were stabilised with minimal
admissions to state and private hospitals.
Party time with a song in their
heart
Unfortunately we are sad to announce the
passing of Arthur Stern. As always is the case this proved to
be most traumatic both to residents and staff. We wish the family
Long life.
Here the staff were most supportive and impressive the way the
residents were cared for under these trying circumstances.
Finance or rather lack of it as has been the case over the past
years, continues to rear it's ugly head and all efforts to reverse
the situation has not been successful. The Committee is still
burdened, how best to attend to the affairs of Glendale without
compromising the quality of services offered. Not an easy task.
Continued lack of involvement by parents remains a constant concern.
It is so frustrating having to mention this fact in every Newsletter.
If only parents and guardians would realise the benefits to Glendale
and the residents, if they would render assistance in regard
to transporting their children to Doctors, Dentists, and Hospitals.
We just do not have adequate means at our disposal to do so without
your assistance. We appeal to all parents to please help make
the
Glendale transport system more efficient.
We are in the process of organizing a Sub
Committee to up grade and make the birthday parties more exciting
and if anyone has suggestions in this regard please contact Melanie
Shapiro - Social Worker.
Friday 28th January 12 residents and staff
once again went on a weekend stay at Mykonos. The excitement
was great and a wonderful time was had by all. It is hoped that
these outings whether Mykonos or other venues will continue to
take place in the future. The emphasis as always is to give the
residents a new experience.
The Alpha Omega Fraternity are in the process
of installing a complete mini dental surgery at Glendale. This
will be staffed by various members of the Fraternity on a regular
basis.
Although the actual dental procedures will not be done in this
Unit the oral hygienist will refer the residents who require
dental treatment either to their own dentist or the Alpha Omega
Panel.
At the combined birthday party that took
place on Sunday 23rd January
Dina Zuckerman celebrated her 70th birthday. This special occasion
was celebrated in great style both by residents and many visitors.

Julia's Annual Fish Braai once again took
place 13th February and this year's was the best ever. Three
hundred and seventy five guests sat down to a sumptious braai
with fish grilled to perfection.
The weather was perfect, the food was great and the atmosphere
terrific. It was a day to remember and received the support it
certainly deserved. A substantial amount of money was raised
for the benefit of the residents. THANK YOU JULIA , YOU ARE A
STAR.
If you have missed out this year, all is not lost, there will
be a repeat performance next year.
